Loneliness in the Modern Age

"Loneliness is the price we have to pay for being born in this modern age, so full of freedom, independence, and our own egotistical selves" (pg 30, Sensei)

Write about your thoughts on this quote...in what ways, for example, does social media in our time perhaps isolate people as much as it connects people? Does it augment our egotism? Are we "together" but "alone"?

In this age and time, loneliness may be prominent due to all the technology that we all have access to now. Being that people can just text each other instead of talk is an incentive for people to just stay home instead of go outside and hang out with that person. People aren't as used to having face to face confrontation with one another since they are so used to talking through the person through a screen. Phones and technology have limited human connection as in relation to dating, someone can just swipe right on tinder instead of asking the person out in real life. And in continuation, once those people finally go out on a date, they may just decide to stare at their phones more than to just simply talk to each other. It is common for some couples to just be sitting at the dinner table with their heads down, just looking at their screens. Thus through this example, these people are 'together' yet alone being that they are occupied with something else on their phones instead of talking. Moreover, all social media begins to evolve, people are getting more attached to their screens than ever, just stalking other peoples lives. It is common for people to be on their phones for hours, as time can just fly by when your reading memes. Furthermore, phones are commonly used for the purpose of avoiding conversations with someone. For example, when a person comes by that another person doesn't like, then that other person will just act like he/she is on his/her phone in order to look like they're doing something.
